    Pragyã Gatibidhi 10.3 (March 2005/ Chaita 2061)

     

    January 9, 2005 (Poush 26, 2061): In a talk programmed organised by Royal Nepal Academy, Poet Laureate Madhav Prasad Ghimire highlighted the significance of cultural identity of a nation and added that Prithivi Narayan Shah strove successfully to unite the nation because he believed in Nepal's special potential for oneness among the multiplicity of its cultures.

    Professor Dr. Basudev Tripathi, Vice-Chancellor of Royal Nepal Academy, reminded the audience of the necessity of keeping alive the memory of Prithivi Narayan Shah to make greater progress in the nation.

    Professor Dr. Tulsiram Vaidya, poet Bairagi Kainla, Dr. Ram Dayal Rakesh and Dr. Beena Ghimire also spoke on this occasion.

    On behalf of the organisers, academician Jagaman Gurung opined that it is every citizen's duty to preserve nation and nationality. He hoped that such a talk programme would inspire everyone to do so.

    Multilingual Poetry Symposium: On the fourth day of the weeklong programme organized to commemorate the 283rd Prithivi Birth Anniversary and National Unity Day, Royal Nepal Academy organized a multilingual poetry symposium in which poems written in fourteen different languages of Nepal were recited.

    Speaking as the Chief Guest, Poet Laureate Madhav Prasad Ghimire said that poetry is possible in all the numerous languages of our country and that such poetry should embrace the special components of the language in which it is written. This will contribute to the growth of that language.

    Vice-Chancellor of Royal Nepal Academy, Professor Dr. Basudev Tripathi said that it was the duty of all Nepalis, despite the caste or ethnic group they belonged to, to work together to translate Prithivi Narayan's dream into reality.

    Poet Bairagi Kainla said that it was the duty of each Nepali to protect this garden of various ethnic groups that Nepal is. Academician Bhuwan Dhungana explained that such poetry symposia as the one being held had the objective of promoting national unity through poetry.

    Twenty poets including Bairagi Kainla, Dr. Vishnuraj Atraya, Vijaya Bajimaya, Durgalal Shrestha, Bhadra Ghale, and Betty Bajracharya recited their poems.

     

    January 10, 2005 (Poush 27, 2061): On the occasion of the 283rd. Anniversary of Prithivi Narayan Shah, also commemorated as National Unity Day, Royal Nepal Academy organised a procession from Kamaladi to Singh Durbar. There garlands and bouquets were offered to the statue of Prithivi Narayan Shah as tokens of love and respect to His late Majesty who unified the kingdom of Nepal.

    A unit of Royal Nepal Army saluted the full statue of Prithivi Narayan Shah as students of Vedavidyashram chanted the Vedic mantras. Similarly, Vikshus recited mantras of peace.

    Speaking on this occasion, Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deowa wished that the observation of National Unity Day would inspire all Nepalese to unite for creative tasks ahead. Minister of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Deep Kumar Upadhay opined that everyone should imbibe the teachings and be inspired by the life of His Late Majesty Prithivi Narayan Shah.

    While poet laureate Madhav Prasad Ghimire emphasized the need to unite for the establishment of peace in the nation, Professor Dr. Basudev Tripathi requested all academicians and the general public to work to fortify national brotherhood and to spread goodwill.

    Member-secretary of Royal Nepal Academy Geeta Keshari had begun the function by reading out selected quotations from the text by Prithivi Narayan Shah.
